Women’s rights activists are energized by the recent appointments of Hillary Clinton as the Secretary of State, Janet Napolitano as the first woman to serve as the Secretary of Homeland Security, and Susan Rice as an ambassador to the UN.
Since her days as the First Lady, Ms. Clinton has been an avid advocate for women’s rights worldwide, and in her new role she is expected to renew American efforts to improve conditions for women and girls around the world. Some also hope that Ms. Clinton may move the US to ratify international treaties (we blogged about our failure to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women here).
