The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s editorial board has come out in favor of a Florida court’s ruling that the ban on LGBT people adopting children in that state is unconstitutional.
[Florida is] one of a few states with laws that prevent gay men and lesbians from adopting children. With nearly 1,000 Florida children waiting to be adopted, however, there’s nothing fun about that.
Fortunately, a Miami-Dade Circuit Court judge ruled that the three-decade ban was unconstitutional. “The best interests of children are not preserved by prohibiting homosexual adoption,” Judge Cindy S. Lederman wrote in her opinion.
No wonder. The American Psychological Association said in 2004, “There is no scientific basis for concluding that lesbian mothers or gay fathers are unfit parents on the basis of their sexual orientation. On the contrary, results of research suggest that lesbian and gay parents are as likely as heterosexual parents to provide supportive and healthy environments for their children.”
