Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State, and Susan Rice, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, have announced that the United States will seek election to the United Nations’ Human Rights Council. According to a press release, Ambassador Rice says that she and Secretary Clinton believe that the U.S. will be able to work more effectively for the global promotion and protection of human rights from within the Council.
This announcement has been met with criticism by some Republicans, as this reverses the Bush administration’s lack of support for such involvement. However, Human Rights Council President Martin Ihoeghian Uhomoibhi has welcomed the U.S. announcement, stating that this development is “further evidence of [U.S.] commitment to advancing human rights globally.”
