Women’s Law Project is part of a coalition working to enact urgent, immediate worker and public health protections as we all prepare to face the unknowns of coronavirus.
We have been fighting for paid sick days, a basic public health and worker protection, for years. WLP attorney Amal Bass testified in support of the Philadelphia paid sick days ordinance which passed into law in 2015.
Now, in light of the immediate emergency faced by working people in the face of the coronavirus epidemic, we are asking Philadelphia’s City Council members to amend the city’s Paid Sick Days law to respond to the conditions created by a public health emergency.
The spread of the coronavirus and voluntary closures of schools and workplaces is not routine. Our paid sick days ordinance does not consider the kind of public health scenario we are facing.
Specifically, we’re calling for job protection, increased coverage, health insurance continuation, affordable testing, ICE-free healthcare facilities, and support to inform workers of their rights, among other efforts you can review in the petition.
Will you sign this petition and share it today?
Meanwhile, paid sick days in Pittsburgh begins to take effect this weekend. After a yearslong battle to enact paid sick days for Pittsburgh workers, Pittsburgh workers will begin accruing their paid leave time on Sunday, March 15.
The Women’s Law Project is the only public interest law center in Pennsylvania devoted to advancing the rights of women and girls.
