Two summers ago, everything changed.
When WLP’s longtime executive director retired, the two of us stepped into executive leadership as co-directors … right as the U.S. Supreme Court released the biggest assault on our reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy.
With your support, we’ve met the moment.
Over the last two years, we expanded staff and pro bono legal aid services to serve more people in need. We’ve celebrated big wins in court and the Capitol: Legislation to ban non-consensual pelvic exams passed both chambers and is now the law. The Commonwealth finally got out of the grim business of financing anti-abortion executives through the anti-abortion “crisis pregnancy center” industry. And we transformed the legal landscape for challenging abortion restrictions in state court and unlocked the Pennsylvania Constitution’s Equal Rights Amendment by winning Allegheny Reproductive Health Services v. Pennsylvania Department of Human Services in Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
It hasn’t been easy, but we are winning because we are strong. In fact, despite the enormous challenges that come with stripping half the population of our federal right to abortion, Women’s Law Project is the strongest we’ve ever been in our 50 years of working to advance gender justice in Pennsylvania and beyond.
Now, we announce another new chapter.
After 18 years of service, Amal will be leaving WLP at the end of this month to be the Executive Director of the Homeless Advocacy Project, a public interest legal organization that provides free legal help to individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the Philadelphia area.
Sue will remain Executive Director and continue to lead strategic litigation efforts focused on protecting and advancing reproductive freedom in Pennsylvania.
There will be more to say soon. For now, we wanted to share the news and tell you how much we both appreciate your enthusiasm and support.
